Vianne has turned the story of her parents into a fairy-tale style of narrative, one she repeats in the same words each night. In brief, her father Georges was a pharmacist who joined an expedition to Central America. There he drank unrefined cacao with a pinch of chili, a drink said to unlock hidden dreams and reveal destinies. His destiny appeared in the form of Chitza, a wanderer of Mayan descent who moved with the north wind, dispensing remedies to those she met. They returned to France, and she stayed long enough that Vianne was old enough to accompany her when she left to travel again. Mother and daughter set off, wearing what appear to be the same red cloaks as those worn by Vianne and Anouk in the opening scene.

Anouk and her friends were playing down by the river bank when Roux's boats appeared. She ran to her mother to tell her there were pirates at the river. Vianne went with her to see them and they saw from a distance a man playing a guitar. Anouk said he must be the captain of the pirates.
Roux was Irish and called himself a river rat. He seemed to be a good person, and he fell for Vianne. He made it quite clear to her that if she made friends with him, she would make enemies with others.

This is spoken by Roux (Johnny Depp) to Vianne, Josephine and Anouk in the chocolaterie whilst he is mending the door. Roux asks Anouk if Pantoufle (Anouk's imaginary kangaroo) likes chocolate, and she says that kangaroos don't eat chocolate. This culminates into a playful argument, which ends when Roux pretends to eat a worm to prove his point.

He describes it as "subtle, zesty .... disgusting", then sets it free. This is a joke between himself and Anouk. He asks why her kangaroo won't eat chocolate, and she replies by daring him to eat a worm.

Josephine, wife of the café owner Serge, finally leaves her abusive husband and seeks refuge with Vianne. We see her gaining in self-confidence as she gains skill in the preparation of chocolates, and realizes that she can control her own life. When Le Comte discovers that she has left Serge, he first tries to force her to return and respect the sanctity of marriage. When he is made aware of how Serge has mistreated her, he then undertakes the task of turning Serge into a gentleman so that he will have the moral high ground again. The battle of chateau versus chocolaterie for control of the townsfolk is now on for young and old.

Josephine had accepted Serge's apology but she did not want to move back in with him. Serge was very angry about this and became drunk. He broke into the Chocolaterie in the middle of the night shouting to Josephine, 'You stupid girl, can't even use a skillet!'
Josephine, Vianne and Anouk woke up but they couldn't prevent Serge entering the room. Vianne tried to stop Serge attacking Josephine, so he turned to her instead, pinned her down on the floor and tried to strangle her. Josephine grabbed a pan off the shelf and whacked Serge over the head with it! He fell to the floor unconscious, and Josephine said, 'Who says I can't use a skillet?!'
When we first met Josephine she seemed a very jumpy woman, stealing and muttering to herself--this was the effect Serge had on her. When she finally left him, we saw a gradual transformation take place, from a jumpy nervous lady to a beautiful calm woman.

Roux, a water gypsy who comes to the town on his boat, tries to sell some of 'Ireland's finest' to Vianne. She politely refuses until she sees La Comte coming, then she changes her mind and asks a surprised Roux if she could have two.

The fact that he studies history is a deep irony, as he studies the past, and looks back to his predecessors for inspiration on how to run the village. Hence it being so old fashioned.

Roux (charmingly played by Johnny Depp) is clearly used to being rejected by the small-minded residents of the riverside towns where he and his people visit on their journeys. He is surprised to find someone as unconventional (and beautiful) as Vianne. In a later scene we see Serge refuse to serve him, and the little girl with him who wants a drink, in the cafe, followed by Vianne calling them in to her shop. As a friendly response, he offers to fix the broken window in her shop door. It is while he is doing this that he and Anouk get into a conversation about why Pantoufle won't try chocolate that leads to Roux pretending to eat a worm, to show that he his more adventurous than the invisible kangaroo. Vianne is frustrated to discover that she cannot predict his favorite chocolate, as she has infallibly done with others. We wonder whether her first offering really was his favorite, and he is merely denying it as a form of courtship game; it certainly gains her attention, and the interchange is repeated several times during the movie before he tells her that she has finally succeeded.

The Count opened his wardrobe and pulled out one of his wife's dresses. He had just begun cutting it when Serge called to him saying, 'I must speak to you.'
They went down to the river bank and saw the party taking place on Roux's boat. The Count said to Serge, 'Something must be done, Serge, something must be done.'

Caroline's son Luc has a morbid fascination with death and an unnatural talent for drawing. Vianne asks him to do a portrait for her. Later, he finds out that it is just a clever rouse to let him spend time with his grandmother, Armande (Judi Dench).
